getting ducks one day and I will be coming to this website for more info.
My boyfriend and I get a 50 lb bag of natural duck food and go to Argyle Lake in
Babylone, NY (on Long Island) and feed them. There isn't a week that we don't go.
Sometimes when I am down we go during the week. We love to make duckies happy!
As my boyfriend says..."duckies are for friends, not for eating!"

duck and I thought I'd do a bit of research, I came across your site and I've found
it very helpful. We've had various pets including chickens, but we're considering
a duck because we have a very large, empty looking pond and loads of room around
the garden to keep it. My Dad adores looking after pets and puts his whole heart
into it, and there are plenty of us around to help him! If we get a duck I'll
let you know, but in the mean time we've got to make sure we're 100% prepared so

since I was 9 years, old and I love visiting your website to watch your cute
ducks on the cam!(They always seem to have that look that they know someone or
something is watching them)haha. When I am away from my ducks and geese, I just

Ducks are truly great pets! Even though I seem to like my geese more than my

Jennifer New Jersey, USA I have lived on the river my whole life growing up with ducks as part of the
neighborhood. Every year we have a few mallards that make our pool there home for
the daytime. After being told that bread is not good for them I immediately went
out and got duck pellets for them. They love to eat the bugs in our pool but we
also keep some pellets out for them so they can come back to our pool instead of
being injured in another yard. I love that there is a website that supports our feathered
friends.

Tony I finally was able to talk to a vet, along with a wildlife conservancy group,
and also a pet store - all had the same consensus about feeding birds bread; It's okay
in small quantities, but if fed too much bread, it'll fill up the ducks, and they won't
eat food which is healthy for them. They like it, but it's nutritionally useless to their
bodies. This goes for all birds (and especially water fowl), not just ducks.
As for poppy and sesame seeds - the reason I had asked the question originally is because the bread that was given to us is all seeded. I have a condition called "diverticulosis", it's extremely painful, and I'm not allowed to eat ANY seeds or nuts. The vet was the only one able to answer about the seeds. He said that like the bread, the poppies and sesames are nutritionally worthless to most birds. In quantity, it could be fatal to some, and would be best to avoid feeding ducks, geese, swans, gulls and pigeons any seeds at all. I also asked about whether birds can suffer from diverticulosis, and he say yes. That could mean those seeds could cause the birds to suffer the same pain I had - and it is extremely painful, birds can't talk and say "help me", and would suffer this in their silence. There are also other medical conditions which seeds can aggravate - ducks don't normally find those seeds, so it's rarely a problem for them. But when people feed them, they tend not to think about that, thinking "animals can eat nearly everything". WRONG! But you already knew that :-) So, we have some pet stores in the area where I can buy duck pellets, and all I talked to said hands-down that's best for any water fowl. Thanks for your help, and for nudging me to get answers. When we go to the park to feed the ducks, I'll be bringing an extra baggy of pellets with me, in case there's someone feeding them bread. I'll just swap 'em...thank you again. • 02-05-03
